The handle is made of fast-growing Moso bamboo which is biodegradable. During its two-year growth phase, Moso bamboo reaches a height of up to 20 metres. Artificial irrigation is not used in the bamboo cultivation, nor are pesticides or other chemicals.
The bio-based bristles are obtained from castor oil. The oil derived from the plant ricinus communis is processed into bio-based bristles and is free of BPA and petroleum. The castor bean oil bristles are 100% plant-based: they break down into nutrients that can be used by plants, not the toxic mess petroleum-based products leave behind.
The solvent-free coloured lacquers of the natural colour manufacturer AURO, which are used to colour the handles, are also consistently ecological.
Given the fact that dentists recommend changing out your toothbrush every 3 – 4 months and that toothbrush bristles are not reusable, that amounts to a whole lot of bristles being tossed away in the course of your lifetime.
Right now, almost all bamboo toothbrushes are made with petroleum-based plastic bristles which cannot be composted and will become toxic micro plastics once they start to degrade. Commercial toothbrush bristles that are made with petroleum not only contribute to demand for crude oil (as that is what petroleum is made from) but because they are so small, they are almost impossible to recycle.
The bio-based bristles from Hydrophil toothbrushes can probably take about a year or more to break down in your home compost. However, once they do, they will become plant food (as in they will break down and make the soil more nutrient dense), as opposed to petroleum-based plastic bristles which quite literally break down into micro-plastics and become toxic to the soil and surrounding plant life.
Moso Bamboo: The CO2 Superhero
Thanks to its naturally antibacterial nature, bamboo is the perfect material for producing innovative and sustainable hygiene products. In the growing region (China), moso bamboo is treated to perfect growing conditions near Lishui and can reach heights of up to 20 metres. One plant – from which up to 100 bamboo toothbrushes can be produced – removes 18 metric tonnes of CO2 from the environment during the approximately two-year growth phase. To keep transportation routes as short as possible, Hydrophil processes their products in the direct vicinity of the growing region while ensuring the creation of awareness for sustainability and fair working conditions.
Hydrophil creates innovative and sustainable hygiene products. Products that should serve to broaden the view for topics such as sustainability and scarcity of resources. Their goal is to achieve beautiful things though the production of a sustainable full range of personal care products for the bathroom – water-neutral, vegan & fair.
Whenever possible they use resources which don’t endanger ground or drinking water and don’t require artificial irrigation. In this way they can significantly reduce water consumption and make people aware of it. In order to have a positive influence on our world, their products neither contain animal products nor are they tested on animals. Hydrophil also believes that fair work deserves a fair reward and they keep a personal eye on their value chain down to the smallest detail to ensure that their products are produced fairly. Their mission is quite simple: to sensitize you to sustainable consumption in your everyday life with their products.
Hydrophil donates 10% of their profits to the non-profit association Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli, which is committed to providing access to clean drinking water for people in countries of the global South. Hydrophil is also a ClimatePartner that supports climate protection projects in India.
